A 24 x 16 inch 100% cotton reproduction handkerchief based on one carried by Sgt. Ira L. Lindsey of the 25th Massachusetts Infantry.
A Civil War reproduction handkerchief based on the original carried by Sergeant Ira L. Lindsey of the 25th Massachusetts Infantry.
The original handkerchief was among the articles collected after Lindsey was killed during the Battle of Cold Harbor in June 1864. It is now in the private collection of South Union Mills and was obtained as part of a group that included a watch chain and two handkerchiefs.
Lindsey was born in Leeds, Maine, later moved to Massachusetts, and worked as a shoemaker and machinist before his service. This reproduction preserves a personal textile connected to a documented soldier and one of the war’s most significant battles.
