Rubberized rain coat

These rubberized rain coats are patterned off original examples and feature a fold down collar and two exterior patch pockets (as seen in original examples).  This coat is not a "copy" of any one rubberized raincoat of the period, but it is a combination of features found on original examples.  The coat is single breasted and has a 4 button closure with handsewn button holes.  There are no good reproductions of Goodyear rubber buttons available so our reproductions are available with black composite buttons that closely resemble period hard rubber buttons.  Original Goodyear hard rubber buttons are readily available on ebay and through The Button Baron if you would like to purchase original buttons for your raincoat.

As stated above, this coat is made from rubberized cloth.  The coat features sewn seams and not vulcanized seams, and therefore there will be some dampening around the top seams if the wearer is in a hard rain/downpour as the sewn seams make the rubberized cloth not completely waterproof.  I have worn this coat in heavy rains and there was a dampening of interior of the coat around the seams, but I was still much much drier than I would have been without the coat or with a poncho!  The coat also features a reinforced tail split to keep the split from ripping at the stress point (problem seen in some originals).

Note - If you are able to order, your coat should be in stock.  Mistakes can happen, but we are making every effort to keep these coats in stock for quick delivery.

go-to coat for wet weather protection

Posted by Peter on 6th Jan 2019

Simple and effective design - does exactly what it should. Being lighter and more wearable than heavier oil skin garments, this is my go-to coat for working in the rain and taking along if the weather looks doubtful. Size advice was perfect - many thanks.

    Excellent, functional recreation

I've had little to compare this to, as period raincoats of the 19th Century aren't that common. The quality of the "rubberized" cloth is very good, and supple. The construction is sound, and mirrors standard methods of the time period. Button holes are hand done very well. Buttons may be simulated gutta percha or other early "plastic", but I think I'll replace with original hard rubber versions, as I've seen these on other similar original garments. This will be used for late 19th Century Navy/Marine "living history" purposes, where ponchos were being replaced. Well worth the price.

Excellant coat. Bought one a couple of sizes larger so I could wear my jacket and gear underneath. Fits super even without my gear. Would recommend this to anyone wanting to upgrade their kit. As always South Union Mills delivers the goods with quality and fast shipping.

    Rubberized Raincoat Review

Posted by Phil Spaugy on 3rd Sep 2015

Received my raincoat last week and am very please with the quality. Two items that are worthy of note: 1) The black paint is starting to peel off the brass buttons. 2) I think that you should consider making the sizes a bit larger to go over blouses and jackets etc.
