We are excited to be offering this reproduction "Cantel" style leather canteen. The original "improved" canteen was patented on October 14, 1862 by New York leather worker Lazare Cantel. The original canteen was made from molded leather and lined with metal foil sheeting, and then joined together with copper rivets, and topped with a pewter spout. Likewise, our reproduction is made from molded leather, but for safety and sanitation reasons, we chose to line this reproduction extremely thin (just as the original sheeting) food grade aluminum sheeting. It is important to note that we give this information as full disclosure, because there is no way this material can be seen without disassembling and cutting apart the canteen. Furthermore like the original, we top our canteen off with a pewter spout and leather sling. A great reproduction of a lesser known and seen Civil War era canteen!
