The Johnson family were well-known Philadelphia Quakers, and in the mid-1800s their home became a stop on the Underground Railroad. Today, that home is preserved as the Johnson House Historic Site.

This reproduction is based on a handkerchief owned and used by George K. Johnson. The original piece is richly detailed, and this version was carefully recreated to reflect the look and character it would have had when new, rather than its aged appearance today.

Lovely Pattern and Quality

This, like many other products from South Union Mills are made with great quality. I love the various patterns in particular because I think it is rather difficult to find patterns like those from the era. I was very happy to have this one on Remembrance Day due to its pattern being very on-topic.

George Johnson Handkerchief

I received this beuatiful recreation of an actual period handkerchief as a surprise Christmas gift from my wife. Like the three other SUM handkerchiefs that I have been using for years, this edition of that line of their products just oozes quality and authenticity. With iitems such as these available there is no need to settle for "Made in China" bandanas or scraps of oddball patterened cloth as part of your re-enacting kit. You won't be disappointed with this handkerchief. The large size is perfect for wearing around your neck after soaking in a little bug dope to keep the insects off you. It will be a shame to get it dirty, but that is part of the hobby.
