Civilian Style Cap

$42.95

We did a great deal of research from period photographs, trying to reproduce a cap that has been rarely, if ever, reproduced.  There are several reproductions on the market of the more "flop" mechanic style caps, but not many have been done, that we could find, of this very short visor style of tight fitting cap.  Our reproduction is being offered in navy blue wool or jean cloth wool/cotton, with a leather visor and cotton lining and leather sweatband.  There is nothing fancy about these caps, they were a utilitarian type of head wear, but can be seen in numerous pictures from the mid 19th century

Note - We try to keep several sizes in stock.  If your size is not in stock at the time of order, a wait of 4-6 weeks may be necessary.  Please understand this before ordering, as we cannot accept mid-order cancellations because an item doesn't make it to you for a particular event.

Received my cap today. Just as expected. Fit perfect and constructed beautifully! Never disappointed with anything from SUM.

    Nicely Made

Posted by Rusty Ayers on 10th May 2022

Nice light weight, not too hot for summer wear. Fit is perfect. I would agree with other reviewers who say the brim doesn't flop down as much as the preview image shows -- it's more straight like a forage cap than a lower-brimmed McDowell-style cap. I'm hoping it flops more after I've worn it a while.

Shapes nicely and is of high quality.

Posted by Robert Wilson on 11th Jan 2021

When it arrives it has a very uniform shape, not like what's seen in a lot of photographs where this style is seen. However, that's not an issue if you do as they did and wear it, through rain (or a bathroom sink) and let it do as it wants. Mine got a nice flop to the front and came to fit better as well, it was on the tighter side of things due to my hair having some length on the top. The wool and leather are of fantastic quality, and once shaped how I wanted I got a good few compliments on it while seeing how others liked it.

This time I ordered the right size! I still hold to what I posted to begin with. It is a wonderful, lightweight hat. It fits snug and makes a wonderful addition.

    Civilian Hat

Posted by David Quin on 17th May 2017

I love this hat. When I have worn it, I have gotten compliments on it. It is lightweight, but feels good. The only issue I have, and it is totally my fault, is that it is a bit too big for me. So, measure correctly is the warning I give. I will one of these days, reorder the hat, but with the correct measurement.
