U.S. Sanitary Commission Socks

Hand knit wool socks were the first hand knit item that we began carrying back when we only had a period peddler's cart to peddle from at events.  Since that time we have always offered these socks to our customers and continue to receive very positive comments about their quality, comfort, and durability.  These socks are taken from the U.S. Sanitary Commission patterns that were designed for relief of the soldiers at the front.  The yarns used in our socks come from a North American mills that has been in business since 1857.  The wool is spun and dyed in this mill before going to our knitters to be made into our knit products.  These socks are they are advertised as; completely hand knit from North American yarns by individual North American craftspeople who receive a fair wage for their labor and skill.  We have been in partnership with these craftspeople for quite some time and are honored to support a guild that honors and preserves such "old world" skills and traditions.

  • Hand knit from 100%, 2 ply woolen yarns.
  • Knit using period patterns from the U.S. Sanitary Commission
  • Available using solid colors or with contrasting heel and toe colors

    Excellent reproductions

The socks fit as expected and appear to be very well made. They are quite thick, being two ply wool. They are for a 19th century costume and are perfect for it.

Recently received 2 pair of these socks and they look great. I can already tell that they'll do much better than some of the others I own. Looking forward to field testing them

Was a bit reluctant to spend the money for these socks, but finally did and have no regrets other than they only had one pair in my size. Extremely comfortable, warm, and well made. Looking forward to getting another pair or two. Thanks.

I received a pair of these fine socks as a gift last week, and I must say that they have exceeded my expectations in every way.My feet have never felt more comfortable in my brogans. I like them so much that I have ordered another pair for my kit for our reenactment in February. I have no question that they will perform nicely to help keep my feet warm.

    Warm and Toasty

These socks arrived in the nick of time for Cedar Creek. Kept my feet comfortable throughout the day, double quicking up hill and down dale and warm and cozy at night under my blankets and ground cloth in the chilly night.

    Hand Knit socks hold up

After 5 days of continual wear in the field at the Kennesaw Mountain 150th I can say that these socks are a winner. They didn't fall down, bunch up, or stain my feet. The cushioning was also great as I was on my feet most of those 5 days.
