19th Century Civilian Sack Coat

Made by the same maker as our paletots, these civilian sack coats are an excellent addition to your mid-19th century impression.  Made from 100% wool outer, with brown polished cotton lining and white cotton sleeve linings.  These coats feature cloth covered buttons and excellently finished hand sewn button holes.  This is THE coat of the mid 19th century men's civilian impression!  I've owned and sold numerous sack coats through the years, and these are some of the best I've been able to offer.  Great weight and quality construction that will greatly add to your impression.

We also offer the option of a black cotton velvet collar on these coats to "dress" them up.  Please state that you would like this option in the "Customer Comments" upon checkout, if you would like that option.

Sizing info: this garment is sized similar to modern sport or suit coats, so choose your chest size and keep in mind if you are going to be wearing a vest under the coat.  Also take into account if you have an unusually long or short sleeve length, let us know that information in the customer comments.

    19th Century Civilian Sack Coat

Posted by Micah Scott on 10th Mar 2021

I am a docent at Columbia State Historic Park and I portray multiple California Gold Rush people for different events. This sack coat is perfect for almost any character its not to formal for a gold miner to wear but is nice enough for a store owner to have. I dress in historical clothing every day just as my general since of style and I have been wearing this coat whenever I go out. Its good quality craftsmanship and its great for cool weather. If I could I would give more than 5 stars I would. This is a must have for any 19th century civilian character and at a decent price the quality is still great.

    Great Coat

I recently ordered a couple of sack coats for programming at my site. I am always pleased with SUM's quality, construction, and fabric. These make excellent examples to use.

    Sack coat

This is a really nice coat. The only "complaint" I have is that the sleeves are about 6 inches too long. No biggie. Other than that, this coat is first rate.

    Excellent value, good workmanship

I'm a docent at a site that interprets the mid-1850s, and was looking for a coat that would be right for this period. When I came across this sack coat, with its small, high velvet collar, I decided this was it. Very well made and better overall construction than other coats I've seem costing much more. The hand-stitched button holes are a special touch -- equal to originals I've seen in museums. I have one minor complaint: The fabric covered buttons are too fragile. One of them separated from the shank the first time I attempted to button the coat. I'd recommend replacing them with more durable wood or bone buttons. Finally, buying ready-made period clothes online is always a hit-or-miss proposition when it comes to getting the right fit, and this sack coat was no exception. In the past, I've found that repro garments often tend to run small compared with modern sizes. Consequently, I ordered this coat two sizes larger than I would buy off-the-rack, which proved to be a mistake, as it was way too wide in the shoulders and the sleeves were over three inches too long. Consequently, I'll be returning it for exchange for a smaller size. However, In spite of these problems, I highly recommend this coat. You won't find a better buy for the money.

    19th Century sack coat.

I purchased a black 19th century from South Union Mills on July 2 2017, I am pleased with the quality of the coat. It has an left inner breast pocket. I was pleased to discover the the two deep lower front pockets on each side of the coat. These pockets can easily hold a deck of cards or a tin of caps. I wore this coat for a recent movie shoot. This coat looks good and can be worn outside of reenacting as well. In the past, I have also purchased winter hat (red white &blue) and a blue colonial coverlet. Both are wam, especially the winter coverlet. I like South Union Mills because they have high quality and a high level of authenticity.

Looking for the Chance to Wear

There hasn't been any events yet that I can wear this to, so this review is limited. Once I opened the box (fast shipping BTY), I knew that I had a quality product. The lower pockets are wide enough that I can actually fit my hand in them and not have to use two or three fingers to retrieve something. The sleeves are 1" long on me but that will be an easy fix. Overall appearance is first rate. This should satisfy a discriminating person.
