Confederate General Wise Mule Slippers – Reproduction

The original pair of these humble yet storied mule slippers belonged to Confederate General Obadiah Jennings Wise of Virginia. They were taken with his trunk upon his death at the Battle of Roanoke Island and afterward presented to Sergeant Richard Williams of the 51st Pennsylvania Infantry—thus preserving a singular relic of camp and campaign life.

Our faithful reproductions of this rare style are crafted of stout leather, with a flat sole and no heel, offering comfort and ease of wear. They serve well about the home, in camp, or when a quick errand beyond the tent does not warrant the trouble of lacing brogans or drawing on stiff boots.

Available in natural or black leather, these mules are offered in-stock only. Should your size not presently be available, you may join our In Stock Notification list to be apprised when new pairs are ready.

A distinctive reproduction—both useful and steeped in history. Our reproductions are crafted from naturally dyed leather by an expert leather worker in Morocco.

Obadiah Jennings Wise Civil War Era Mules

Posted by Jim on 4th Apr 2025

It's a given that not every civil War soldier would have carried these. However, when I have crawled into my shelter tent in bivouac, or in the barracks of a fort, it is almost a certainty that the latrine or toilet is going to be far, far away. After a day of constant hydrating, the need to use said latrine often comes in the middle of the night. After a day of maneuvering in my brogans, my feet can swell up, making them difficult to put on when this urgent need strikes. These mules are just the ticket to don rapidly and head to the facilities when time is of the essence. They are very well made and fit in with the period.
